West Basin Development

Earlier this month, new details of the proposed changes to Lake Burley Griffin’s West Basin precinct were revealed as the City Renewal Authority submitted its works approval application to the National Capital Authority.

The public consultation period on the works, which include the construction of a new boardwalk (including reclaiming land currently under water) and associated infrastructure for apartments, closes on 22 May.

A broad range of concerns about this development have been raised by NCCC members as well as by groups such as the Lake Burley Griffin Guardians, who have worked tirelessly to raise issues around the further privatisation of public land and green space and diminution of the area’s heritage values.

The NCCC, in particular, notes that the short time frame for public consultation and inability to canvass these issues in a public forum is regrettable for a development of such significance for the North Canberra community.

Campbell Primary School Carpark

As many of you will have noticed, the vacant land between Campbell Primary School, the WE O’Brien Court Independent living facility and Chauvel St, is now a grassless and compacted area. It has become overflow parking and now some cars not associated with the school are parked there all day.
The ground is compacted, the remaining tree is in danger. This is not only an eyesore when the wind rises it lifts the dry topsoil, and dust storms are created affecting neighbouring properties including those on the opposite side of Chauvel Street.

Whilst some attempts have been made by the School, this does not seem to be a long term deterrent. We encourage you to add your voice to this issue to protect this land and amenity of our suburb,

Please see letter to the ACT Education Directorate below from a Campbell Resident,

Rabbit Control Program

We are running a rabbit program in Mt Ainslie and Mt Majura starting next week. This includes pindone baiting, fumigation and ripping. We were hoping that you might be able to help us to spread the word across your community network in Campbell, Reid, Ainslie, Hackett and Watson areas. We will have signs on entrances and have letterbox dropped residents backing onto the reserves with the attached letter.

Thank you.

Community Information Session

Saturday, March 14th at 11 am in the park behind the Campbell shops

As part of the ACT Governments’ Adopt-a-Park program, the Campbell community has been fortunate to receive some funding to start making improvements in the park behind the Campbell shops!

Plans to enhance and improve the park have been drawn up by Barbara Payne of Quandong Designs and include proposals to:

  • enhance the park by planting an understory for the remnant Box-Gum trees in the park, with an emphasis on plants that attract birds, bees and butterflies,
  • create an enhanced natural setting for the community to enjoy and spend time in,
  • create an outdoor community meeting and performance space,
  • create a space for nature play where children can exercise and learn to recognise species and plants common to the ACT, and
  • create a community vegetable garden.

This grant of funding is the start of an exciting long-term community project which will be run by Campbell community volunteers in association with the ACT Transport and City Services and the Molonglo Catchment Group of Landcare.  Work on the park project is due to commence in April and May this year.

If would like to see the plans and get more information about the park project please join us for the information session in the park between 11 am and 12 pm on 14th March.

If you can’t make it on the 14th but would like to join up to be a volunteer and be part of the project, please send an email to community.campbell at outlook.com.au., or via the contact form.

71 CONSTITUTION AVENUE – MEETING WITH HINDMARSH – 2 MARCH 2020

Julie  Doyle and Sara Cronan met with Mia Dragila from Hindmarsh on 2 March to discuss the current status of the 71 Constitution Avenue project.   Greg Smith, who had been very helpful, has now left Hindmarsh and Mia has been involved in most of the previous meetings.

Several substantial changes are proposed for the development which will require NCA approval, further Consultation and a Works Approval Amendment as follows:

  • The townhouses on Getting Crescent will be replaced with 3 x 2 Bedroom and 9 x 3 Bedroom apartments in a 3 storey block which will be at the same RL as the top of the proposed townhouses.
  • This will be achieved by lowering the ground floor some 450 mm as well as construction of an additional basement carpark
  • Permanent vehicular access from Getting Crescent will not be required and all parking access will be from Creswell Street
  • The ground floor units will have courtyards on the Getting Crescent frontage and balconies at the top level

Items from previous discussions:

  • Demolition now likely to take place from June 2020 onwards
  • 1.2m pedestrian footpath to be constructed on the Getting Crescent frontage prior to construction
  • Getting Crescent temporary construction fencing to be 2.1m Colorbond Windspray and 1.2m from the kerb
  • A new Temporary Traffic Management Plan will be required – timing tba – it will be up to residents to liaise with TCCS when this occurs
  • Single storey site sheds on Getting Crescent frontage – tba.   The new configuration means that it is likely that more sheds can be contained on site during construction
  • 600 tonne crane to be erected in the middle of the site – no overflying
  • We had previously requested the following which had been agreed to:
  • “Having regard to the residential nature and parking limitations on Getting Crescent as well as public risk and safety it is requested that Hindmarsh undertake a letterbox drop to residents mainly in Getting Crescent before undertaking any of the following:
      • Commencement of demolition estimated June 2020 for 5 months
      • Removal of all trees and landscaping on the Getting Crescent frontage between The Creswell, past the HIA up to the 14 Getting Crescent boundary
      • Construction of the 1.2m footpath on Getting Crescent nature strip from Creswell Street western boundary of 14 Getting Crescent
      • Creation of the rear vehicular access to the HIA which may be required for 4 months during excavation of the site
      • Timings of use of the temporary vehicular access off Getting Crescent to 71 via closed gates.”

Campbell Community Cares

The tiny rural communities of Nerrigundah, Cadgee, Belowra & Tin Pot (comprising 40 properties) are situated 20km West of Bodalla on the NSW south coast & were devastated by last week’s fires.

Approximately 26 homes/properties were totally destroyed, leaving those residents with nothing.

Campbell ACT is hoping to embrace these communities with love & care by providing cash assistance directly to them. John Cowan ( one of the residents and also a NSW RFS volunteer), is going to match $ for $ the first $5000 we raise, to help them back on their feet.

A trivia night will be held at The Pedlar on Saturday 18 January (THANK YOU – tickets are sold out!)  If you missed out, contact us or the Pedlar quickly as tickets for the second one are selling fast!!!

A massive silent auction is now planned & underway, with incredible items such as 2 seats at a small private dinner with Ricky Stuart already donated!

A big community fun day in Hassett Park is planned during the Australia Day weekend in January, coinciding with the finalising of all the silent auctions!

We’re aiming to raise $50,000 for these people who have lost everything!

YOU can help by …
 • Leaving your donation at The Pedlar on Constitution Avenue

• Participating in the silent auction .. online bids will also be encouraged!  (email events@vantagestrata.com.au to be added to the list for information on the auction)
